Anorexia nervosa is a mental disorder and a killer. Every 62 minutes at least one person dies as result of having an eating disorder. Death can come not just from starvation but suicide and addiction as well. Anorexia has the highest death rate among all psychiatric illnesses including depression. There are multiple agencies with statistics on eating disorders in the U.S. 1 in 5 anorexia deaths is by suicide. The best estimates are that 20 million women and 10 million men will at some point in their lifetime suffer from an eating disorder. There are many treatment facilities available across the country and treatment for eating disorders can drastically lower the death toll for sufferers but as it stands now if left untreated 20% of anorexics will succumb to their illness. Even with treatment about 20% of anorexics never recover and spend their lives in and out of the hospitals. Eating disorders affect all races and ethnic groups and there is a genetic link approx. 50-80% of the risk for anorexia and bulimia is inherited.
I’ve gathered 11 pics of people, who, went from being an anorexia victim to a victor! This is not an easy road for anorexia sufferers because there is very often an underlying mood disorder or even substance abuse problem that often is a comorbidity. So, let’s just say that it’s never as easy as to say they should just eat more, if it were that easy it wouldn’t be a problem. These victors all look and feel incredible and we should definitely tip our hats to them.
