11 Household Items You Didn’t Realize Had Expiration Dates

1. Sunglasses. While most shades don’t have dates printed on them, it is wise to replace them every 3 to 5 years as the UV blocker becomes less effective over time, potentially exposing you to harmful rays that can cause cancer and cataracts.

2. Carseat. It expires after 6 to 10 years, depending on the type you have – check the bottom of yours for the exact date. The foam inside deteriorates and loses its shape, thereby diminishing its efficacy.

3. Running Shoes. They’re good for about 250 to 300 miles. After that, they lose their cushioning and can contribute to joint pain and other injuries.

4. Pillows. They should be changed every 2-3 years as they start to lose their shape and can contribute to neck pain. Plus, they become rather grossly infested with dust mites.

5. Hairbrush. You’re meant to clean hairbrushes weekly and replace them every 12 months. Boar bristle brushes should be replaced even more frequently – about every 7 to 10 months.

6. Bra. 1 to 2 years, max. As soon as they start to lose their shape (you’ll know because they’re suddenly too big or too small) they are nothing but uncomfortable boob prisons. Toss them without regret.

7. Power Strips. 1-2 years. When a power strip receives a power surge, that energy is diverted to a component called a metal oxide varistor. This component degrades over time, and leaves your devices open to ruination.

8. Fire Extinguishers. They should be replaced every 15 years unless the hose has a defect, in which case replace it stat.

9. Towels. They are meant to last only a year or two. The dampness is a perfect environment for bacteria, and not even washing can get rid of 100% of germs.

10. Chopping Board. Replace it every 12 months, as they are prime spots for harbouring bacteria. As soon as yours starts showing cracks and stains, toss it; that’s a sure sign it’s infected.

11. Tupperware. It should be replaced every 3 months. They are havens for bacteria and chemicals like BPA, BPS, and phthalates.
