The 7 Best Comic Book Super-Heroes Who Haven’t Had Movies Made About Them

Superhero films continue to dominate the box office, with major studios pumping out 2-3 movies a year, which gives big comic book companies like Marvel and DC an opportunity to showcase a whole lot of their characters.

While most folks recognize heroes like Superman, Batman, Captain America, and Hulk- heroes tasked with saving the world from larger-than-life threats on a daily basis- there are still whole hosts of heroes who aren’t getting much play or attention, despite their deeds in protecting the average Joe.

Here’s a list of superheroes who are a bit underrated, don’t get the credit they deserve, but absolutely should have their own film franchises.

1. Moon Knight

Moon Knight is one of Marvel’s most complex and violent characters, though some might think he bears a striking resemblance to Batman. However, when you dig into the lore surrounding the character, he’s nothing at all like the Dark Knight.

Marc Spector, a former Marine and boxer turned mercenary, gets killed in Egypt, right in front of a statue of the Moon God Khonshu, who makes the man a deal, stating he’ll bring him back to life as long as he’ll be his “avatar,” or vessel.

When Spector comes back to the land of of the living, he is gifted with superhuman strength and tasked with hunting down criminals. Unfortunately, all of this takes a hefty toll on Spector’s mental health, fracturing his mind into multiple personalities, which makes him a character ripe for storytelling involving awareness of mental health issues and the like.

2. Nightwing

We’ve seen a whole lot of Batman over the years, but seldom have we gotten much of a true, accurate portrayal of the Boy Wonder on the big screen, particularly after he’s all grown up and sporting some big boy underoos as Nightwing.

Having grown into his own after being trained for years by the legendary Dark Knight, Nightwing — the vigilante formerly known as Robin — takes to the streets of Bludhaven, a city like Gotham that’s in desperate need of a protector.

A film featuring Nightwing could put on display Dick Grayson’s masterful command of martial arts, while also digging deep into the philosophy that shapes his crime fighting and where he draws the line morally speaking between how he does things and how Batman does things.

3. The Question

Seeing a superhero beat the ever loving snot out of a bad guy in the name of “justice” is pretty common fare among comic book films, but there’s one hero who could put that trope on its head: The Question.

Imagine a superhero who was a journalist that was passionate about his craft, exposing the evil men running the underbelly of a big city by publishing their transgressions in the newspaper. That’s Vic Sage, AKA The Question, in a nutshell.

Sage wears artificial skin to help hide his face so he can investigate crimes without his true identity being uncovered, giving him a unique edge against his city’s villains.

4. Squirrel Girl

It’s hard to hear the name Squirrel Girl and not burst into fits of gut busting laughter because, well, it just sounds utterly ridiculous. Yet this character, known as Doreen Green, is one of the most powerful, clever superpowered mutants in the Marvel universe.

Squirrel Girl, armed with the power to talk to, well, squirrels, and a sharp wit and rodent-like reflexes, has been able to take out some of Marvel’s toughest villains, including the “Mad Titan” Thanos.

A film franchise with this character would have to find a way to balance heart and humor, making it clear it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

5. Martian Manhunter

One of the Justice League’s most legendary characters is J’onn J’onzz, the last surviving martian who was called “the most powerful being on earth” by Superman, which means this dude is no joke.

When J’onn’s family died, he decided to help the helpless here on earth, and with cool powers, like shape-shifting and becoming invisible, he’s clearly meant to be more than a background character.

Oh and he’s green. Like the color of money. That’s got to count for something, right?

6. Beta Ray Bill

When Thor’s ready to hang up his hammer and enjoy the good life, relaxing on the beaches of Valhalla, there’s one character who can fill his shoes unlike anyone else: Beta Ray Bill.

BRB, as he’s affectionately known, is an alien being known as a Korbinite, who managed to go toe-to-toe with the God of Thunder himself. He eventually earns Thor’s respect and becomes worthy of Mjolnir, but is granted his own hammer by Odin.

Beta Ray Bill is a major badass who often plays a critical role in the cosmic wars that occur in the Marvel universe, and given that’s what a lot of the films have focused on the last few years, he’d be a perfect addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

7. Doctor Fate

The fact that a Doctor Fate film is not even on the radar for the DC Extended Universe right now is a crime against humanity.

Doctor Fate is actually a helmet that grants the wearer magical powers and has been passed down through numerous people and across different universes. The wearer is able to fly, has superhuman strength, flight, and is virtually unstoppable.

Oh and he has a really freaking awesome cape. Fate has been featured on the hit television series “Smallville,” but absolutely deserves a stand alone film to put his true greatness on display for all to behold.
