The Top 10 Songs That Will Make You Cry

There are many sad songs out there and some make you cry but many are just depressing. Then there are songs so beautiful, touching and true that grip your heart and just squeeze so hard that before you know it the tears start rolling – these are the songs that I have listed here.

1. Say Something – A Great Big World feat Christina Aguilera
Whether you lost someone you loved through death or you finally realized that your relationship is done and over, Say Something is the song that feels like a gut punch you didn’t see coming. Christina’s beautiful voice combined with Ian Axel’s haunts us as much as the lyrics do.

2. Everybody Hurts – REM
It grips you right in the feelz because everybody does hurt for reasons we can’t even fathom many times. Hearing the haunting melody and lyrics song masterfully by Michael Stipe one can only wonder what made him hurt.

3. I’m Not the Only One – Sam Smith
Sam Smith knows what being cheated on feels like and if you’ve ever been hurt in that way, this song explains the pain and allows you to purge it through tears.

4. A Thousand Year – Christina Perri
This song could be about the love of your life, a perfect wedding song or a song about your children. The emotional depth of the words combined with Christina Perri’s delivery will make you cry especially if you try to sing along with her.

5. Brave – Sara Bareilles
As a mother with a non-verbal Autistic 8-year-old son, this song has made me cry and I imagine everyone in a similar situation feels it too. This is my son’s theme song, it came out shortly after his diagnosis, which initially gave us very little hope, but after hearing it we decided that Johnny was going to prove those specialists wrong. And he is doing just that.

6. Cat’s in the Cradle – Harry Chapin
This song makes men weep. It’s about the bonds of fathers and sons …if you had a great relationship with your Dad or a not so great one – this song magnifies it.

7. On Eagle’s Wings -Michael Joncas
Michael Joncas is a Catholic priest and composer of contemporary Catholic music. This song was published in 1979 and the first time I ever heard it was in 1984 at my older sister’s funeral, she was only 22 when she was killed. It became a popular song for the Communion ritual but also at funerals of many Christian denominations. It’s is a beautiful song based on the words of Psalm 91 and Isaiah 40:31. I believe it was played at many memorials after 9/11.

8. Hard Candy Christmas – Dolly Parton
This song is from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and is just a beautiful song of strength and resilience.

9. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – Roberta Flack
Roberta Flack can make you cry simply by humming. This is a deep and touching song of love and how can that not make anyone cry?

10. You Raise Me Up – Josh Groban
Haunting Celtic melody combined with Josh Grobin’s voice and words about emotional strength. Something simply resonates with us all.
